FT. LAUDERDALE – South Florida Caribbean-Americans will get the opportunity to reminisce about their roots on December 24, 2006 at the 2nd annual ‘Ole Time Caribbean Christmas Grand Market and Street Dance’ inside the Lauderdale Marketplace parking lot at Oakland Park Blvd. and 441.
The event is presented by Partners for Youth Foundation, a 501 3(c) corporation in collaboration with Clymax Audio Works. The pre-celebration kicks off on Thursday, December 21 with Carnival rides and culminating with the grand finale on December 24 from 2 p.m. until 2 a.m.
Other attractions will include junkanoo, mento bands, folk singers, parang, punta, quadrille, a domino tournament and sidewalk sales by the vendors in the plaza. Authentic foods such as roast yam & salt fish, roast corn & coconut, fried fish and bammy, roti, puddings, sorrel and soups will be available.
South Florida’s popular DJs, Sir Rockwell, Jamusa, Mark Swaby, C-Roy The Entertainer, DJ SuperCat, 1-800-Bunja and DJ Fergie will provide music throughout the day covering all spectrum – from Ska, Calypso, Rocksteady to Reggae, Dancehall and Soca.
“This is a way for Caribbean immigrants to continue to find ways to nurture our cultural roots and also to connect our kids who are born here. Additionally, other ethnic groups can share the experiences we had back home during this time of the year,” states Colin Riggs, event organizer and president of Clymax Audio Works.
Part proceeds from the event will benefit Air Jamaica “Love Bird Kids” Club, Partners for Youth Foundation and United Negro College Fund.
