Caribbean Artists and Photographers Showcased at Miramar Cultural Center

MIRAMAR – Caribbean countries have always been known for their visually stunning works of art reflecting timeless moments from their respective islands.

Caribbean Canvases and Frames brings those enduring moments to the Ansin Family Art Gallery from June 4th through July 12th as we recognize Caribbean Heritage Month by showcasing works of art from both distinguished and emerging Caribbean artists.

Featured artists include Philippe Dodard, Cecil Cooper, Peter Wayne Lewis, Karl ‘Jerry’ Craig, Turgo Bastien, Franklin Sinanan, Carl Craig, photo journalist Carl Juste and lifestyle photographer David I. Muir.

D. Neil Hall of the Urban Collective and curator for this exhibition selected the artists because their collective works refine and reinterpret issues of self-identity, community, migration and globalization. “These pieces speak to a larger social consciousness of what it means to recodify and reposition Caribbean culture and aesthetics in the 21st century for both the region and an increasingly globalized world,” says Hall.

“The City of Miramar is proud to present Caribbean Canvases and Frames,” says Vice Mayor Alexandra Davis. “This exhibition is a wonderful reflection of some of the residents who make up our diverse city and we look forward to continuing to showcase their countries, uniting their homeland with their adopted land.”

There will be an opening reception on Tuesday, June 4, 2013, 5:30 – 9 p.m. in the Ansin Family Art Gallery at the Miramar Cultural Center, which is open to the public. A number of the artists will be in attendance.

This exhibition is free and open to the public.
