Caribbean-American National Wins Mayoral Seat In Miramar

wayne Messam MayorMIRAMAR – The City of Miramar voted for a new Mayor on Tuesday, March 10th.  Known as one of the most diverse communities in South Florida and home to many Caribbean-American nationals, former Commissioner Wayne Messan was elected as Mayor for the City of Miramar receiving 38% of the votes over the incumbent Mayor Lori Moseley who had 34% and Alexandra Davis with 27%.

Mayor Elect Wayne Messam has lived in Miramar for over 10 years and is a first-generation American with parents from Jamaica.  Messam was elected to the City of Miramar Commission in March of 2011. He currently serves on the National League of Cities -Energy, Environment & Natural Resources Steering Committee. He served two terms as chair of the Broward County Small Business Development Advisory Board where he has been very influential in the policy recommendations that affect the local and small business programs for Broward County and Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) firms.

The four Commissioners in the City of Miramar are Caribbean-Americans nationals also:  Commissioners Winston Barnes, Yvette Colbourne and the two newly elected Commissioners, Max Chambers (Seat 1) and Darline Riggs (Seat 4).

Messam joins City of Lauderdale Lakes, Mayor Barrington Russell as another Jamaican National as a Mayor in South Florida in cities that have a high percentage of Caribbean-Americans.

In his FaceBook post, Messam thanked his supporters and offered the following message:

“I want to say Thank You to the residents of Miramar and all of my supporters during this campaign. Divine Favor was over this race and I am eternally thankful. I have been overwhelmed with many phone calls, text messages, and social media posts. I will follow up with them all on an individual basis.” 

“Now that the race is over, it is time for Miramar to Unite and move forward towards our destiny to be a world class city where everyone has a seat at the table.I  encourage all residents to remain engaged in the affairs of the city. I am your servant and Together we will make Miramar the best city in America to Live, Work, Visit, and Play.  Now let us roll up our sleeves and get to work!”
