Broward County Kicking Off Census 2010 Complete Count Committee

FT. LAUDERDALE On Monday, August 11, 2008 Broward County will continue its official efforts to ensure that every Broward County resident is counted during the upcoming 2010 Census.

At 11:30 a.m. in the Commission Chambers of the Broward County Board of County Commissioners (115 South Andrews Ave., Room 422, Fort Lauderdale, 33301), Commissioner Ilene Lieberman will chair the kickoff meeting for the Census 2010 Complete Count Committee. This Committee will be comprised of representatives from local governments, businesses, human service organizations, media outlets, homeowners and community associations, religious institutions, chambers of commerce and other groups that serve the residents of Broward County.

“Since Census data is used to determine how the Federal government distributes nearly $300 billion annually, it is vitally important to the future of Broward County for the Census count to be accurate,” says Commissioner Lieberman, who was selected by her peers on the County Commission to chair the Census 2010 Complete Count Committee. “Only by partnering with a multitude of community organizations can we accomplish this difficult task.”

Attendees at the meeting will be given an overview of Broward County’s plans for the upcoming Census. Afterwards, they will be given an opportunity to sign up for subcommittees that will address certain specific issues of concern for the upcoming count. The subcommittees are Countywide Coordination, Cultural/Ethnic, Religious Institutions, Promotions, Hard-to-Enumerate, Recruitment, Sponsorship, and Unincorporated Areas. Each of these subcommittees will meet on an increasingly more frequent basis until the Census is completed in the summer of 2010.

“Each of the subcommittees will serve an integral role in helping to get a complete count,” says Lieberman. “I look forward to working together with members of the community to achieve this goal.”
