Broward County Hurricane Preparedness Expo to help residents prepare for 2008 Hurricane Season

PLANTATION – Broward County will host its third annual Hurricane Preparedness Expo Saturday, May 31, at the Broward County Emergency Operations Center (EOC), 201 N.W. 84 Avenue, Plantation, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

More than 40 county agencies and community organizations will display and distribute hurricane preparedness material at this fun and informative event for the entire family. In addition to exhibits, the event will also feature:

  •  educational demonstrations and presentations throughout the day
  • tours of the Broward County EOC, the County’s nerve center during hurricanes and other emergencies
  • displays of emergency response vehicles
  • activities and goody bags for the children

The 2008 edition of Broward County’s Official Hurricane Preparedness Guide will be available. The guide is a 12-page fact-filled tabloid with important preparedness tips, shelter information, maps, telephone numbers and web site addresses. A copy of the tabloid will be mailed to 735,000 Broward County households in early June.

Hurricane preparedness shopping guides will also be available in English, Spanish and Creole. The pocket-size guides provide week-by-week shopping suggestions to help families on a budget get their household hurricane-ready.

Hurricane Outreach Campaign

The Expo is part of Broward County’s ongoing hurricane education and outreach campaign, Ready. Set. Safe., which focuses on the importance of every Broward County household having a hurricane plan, and maintaining supplies of food, water and other essential items to sustain them for up to three days following a storm.

This year, special emphasis will be focused on individuals with special medical needs, and those who are disabled or may become vulnerable in the aftermath of an emergency. The Expo will feature information on important emergency services including Broward County’s Vulnerable Population Registry, Special Medical Needs shelter and evacuation transportation registration, the Hurricane Update Email System, and more.

Light refreshments will be provided by Kiwanis Club Divisions 23 and 24, with proceeds to benefit their Christmas in July event.
