Broward Commissioner visits Trinidad and Tobago for Trade Mission

LAUDERHILL – Broward County Commissioner Dale V.C. Holness led a business delegation of more than 20 people to Trinidad and Tobago on a trade mission on December 16, to encourage trade and develop profitable business relationships with the Caribbean nation.

Commissioner Holness has met twice with Republic of Trinidad and Tobago Prime Minister Kamla Persad Bissessar during prior visits to South Florida.

“We have meetings scheduled with the Prime Minister and she has stated publicly that she wants to expand trade with Trinidad to the worldwide market place. The Minister of Works and Transportation, Jack Warner, is also a voting member of the Federation of International Football Board. He is one of the votes that will determine whether or not Broward County will host World Cup Soccer one day, which too will be a major component of the visit.”

His itinerary also includes meetings with the Minister of Sports, Minister of Culture and Tourism, the Trinidadian-American Chamber of Commerce, Chaguanas Chamber of Commerce and the Manufacturers Association.

“They are the wealthiest Caribbean nation in terms of per capita income. Trinidad companies already do business with our airport and Port Everglades,” said Commissioner Holness. “There are key business opportunities in areas such as alternate energy and wholesale items that Broward County can benefit from.”

Trinidad and Tobago are ranked 22nd among Florida’s top 50 merchandise trading partners with total trade valued at an estimated $1.4 billion in 2009. Exports from South Florida to the twin island nation totaled $877 million last year.

Economic development and expanding international trade was a focal point of Commissioner Holness’ campaign when elected to represent the residents of District 9 in Central Broward County.
