Broward Black Elected Officials’ Gala To Memorialize Broward’s First Black (Jamaican) Mayor

HOLLYWOOD – International American singing icon, Roberta Flack, whose smooth voice was one of the leading sounds of the 70s, will give a command performance at the Broward Black Elected Officials (BBEO) fifth annual Black History Gala.

Flack’s performance will be the grand finale event at THE GALA 2010: “Our Legacy,” which will be held 5 p.m., Sunday, February 28, 2010 at the Hard Rock LIVE, Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood, Florida.

The gala includes dinner, a community service honoree program followed by the performance by Grammy Award-winning Flack, whose major hits include “Killing Me Softly ,” “The Closer I Get To You,” “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” and “Where Is The Love?”

Memorial Tribute To Sam Brown

During the evening, the BBEO will make special acknowledge of the passing of former Lauderdale Lakes Mayor Samuel Brown, who died February 13. In 1998, Mr. Brown, a native of Jamaica, became the first black mayor elected in Broward County. He served for 10 years.

Tickets for the BBEO gala are $150 per person; tables of 10 are $1,500. Both are available by calling the BBEO Gala Hotline at 954-969-6200.

Presenting sponsor is the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Underwriters include Bank of America, Waste Management, Becker & Poliakoff, Florida Power & Light and Harvey, Covington & Thomas.

The BBEO is a Broward County-based 501©3 non-profit organization, which provides programs for the community focusing on education and community outreach.

The evening’s honorees include Flack, television’s Judge Glenda Hatchett, U. S. State Rep. Deborah Wasserman Schultz, Broward County Supervisor of Elections Dr. Brenda Snipes, community leaders Dr. Germaine Smith Baugh of the Urban League of Broward County and Max Osceola of the Seminole Tribe. The corporate honorees are Waste Management and D. Stephenson Construction.

Special awards will be presented to the presidents of Florida’s Historically Black Colleges & Universities: Dr. Sandra T. Thompson of Florida Memorial University, Dr. Trubie Kibbe Reed of Bethune Cookman University, James Ammons of Florida A&M University and Dr. Claudette Williams of Edward Waters College in Jacksonville
Mistress of Ceremonies is Miami-Dade’s own Judge Karen Mills-Francis of the “Judge Karen” syndicated television show.

The event is produced by Roy Campbell, the celebrity special events producer noted for appearances on “America’s Next Top Model” and “The Tyra Banks Show.”
