Bermuda’s Premier fosters new relationships with Argentine Federal Officials

HAMILTON, Bermuda – Bermuda’s Premier Dr. Ewart F. Brown has begun new working relationships with federal officials in Argentina, just as Bermuda intensifies efforts to attract international business from Latin America.

While in Buenos Aires last week the Premier met with several officials, particularly those with oversight in Finance.

“This was a good opportunity for me to let Argentine officials know about Bermuda’s international business sector,” said Premier Brown. “Some already had the background, but others were starting from scratch. Either way, by the time the meeting was over the person on the other side of the table had a good understanding of Bermuda’s regulatory environment, our tax treaty with the United States and our commitment to financial transparency with Governments around the world.”

The Premier met with the Chief of the Office of Argentina Tax and Revenue Claudio Moroni, Vice President of the Central Bank of Argentina Miguel Pesce, Superintendent of Insurance for Argentina Miguel Baelo and Argentina Under-Secretary of Finance Juan Manuel Prada.

The Ministry of Finance has already followed up on the Premier’s visit establishing new dialogue with the Under-Secretary of Finance at the Argentine Ministry of Economy and Production. The dialogue may grow into a bilateral agreement.

Meantime, Mr. Pesce at the Central Bank of Argentine is interested in establishing a similar dialogue with the Bermuda Monetary Authority. The Premier is working to facilitate that relationship as well.

“I want to increase the familiarity between Bermuda and Latin America – both in the public and private sector. I think that will be the key to increasing business from Latin countries,” Premier Brown said.

The Premier also attended the Congress of the Latin American Risk and Insurance Managers Association (ALARYS) in Buenos Aires last week. Following talks between the Premier and ALARYS executives, the organization decided it will meet in Bermuda in 2009.
