Baptist Health International Supports First Beat Breast Cancer Music Festival in Trinidad
MIAMI – Baptist Health International, a division of Baptist Health South Florida, is supporting the initiatives of Trinidad television talk show host and breast cancer survivor Alicia Powell as a premium sponsor of the inaugural Beat Breast Cancer Music Festival, taking place in Trinidad on October 31, 2010.
After being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, Alicia selected the Baptist Health Breast Center at South Miami Hospital for treatment because of the variety of options and highly trained doctors available through the Baptist Health South Florida network. Less than one year later, Alicia is cancer-free and is dedicating her time to raising awareness about breast cancer through her Basia Survivor Network and raising funds for patients through this highly anticipated music festival.
“I’m honored that Baptist Health International has joined me as a partner in this music festival,” said Alicia Powell. “Through this event we will fund CT/PET scans and reconstructive surgeries for those suffering with breast cancer in Trinidad, Barbados and Jamaica. We also hope to use this event to raise awareness throughout the Caribbean about prevention and early detection.”
In addition to musical performances by world-renowned artists, Baptist Health representatives including oncologist Mary Jo Villar, M.D. and breast reconstruction specialist Deidre Marshall, M.D. will address the audience briefly throughout the show on the importance of breast cancer screenings and other preventative measures.
“Alicia Powell is an important member of our Baptist family and we are proud to support her community initiatives and ventures,” stated Lawrence Cole, assistant vice president of marketing and business development for Baptist Health International. “We’re confident this festival will be the perfect venue to create awareness about this critically important topic, not only in Trinidad, but throughout the region. There are so many options for patients and they need to educate themselves about where and how to get the best treatment for their needs.”
The concert will take place from noon to 9 p.m. at Queen’s Park Savannah. The line-up includes performances by Kevin Lyttle, Marcia Miranda and the Kelly Green Band, Arturo Tappin, Alison Hinds, 3 Canal, Destra Garcia, Bunji Garlin, Mungal Patesar & Pantar, Fay-Ann Lyons, Tessanne Chin and Ky-mani Marley. Tickets are available at select First Citizen Bank locations. For more information, visit http://www.basiamagazine.com/survivornetwork.
