Bahamas Embassy to open in Cuba

NASSAU, The Bahamas – The embassy of the Commonwealth of The Bahamas in the Republic of Cuba will be officially opened on Monday, July 17, 2006 in Havana, Cuba.

A delegation of officials led by Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hon. Fred Mitchell will travel to Havana for the official opening events.

The opening of The Bahamas Embassy in Cuba fulfills a public commitment by the Government in this regard and follows more than thirty years of cordial and correct diplomatic relations between The Bahamas and Cuba, beginning in 1974.

Each year, many Bahamians travel to Cuba for education, health care, trade and tourism. The embassy will serve the needs of Bahamians with regard to Cuba and is expected to greatly facilitate trade, travel and the management of various diplomatic agreements between the two countries. In addition, the Embassy will be of service to Bahamians incarcerated in Cuba.

After a distinguished record of performance in the foreign and public service, Ambassador Carlton Wright and his wife Mrs. Audrey Wright have now successfully pioneered the establishment of The Bahamas Embassy in Cuba.

Vice consul Nestor Sands, Bilingual Secretary Shari Hall and Attaché, Able Seaman Oral Woods will join Ambassador Wright in staffing the Embassy. Chanelle Brown will be transferring later in the year from The Bahamas Embassy in Washington, D.C. as Second Secretary/Vice Consul.

Beginning on Monday, July 24th, 2006 The Bahamas Embassy in Havana will off a full range of consular and diplomatic services to Bahamians and other nationals in Cuba with an interest in The Bahamas.
