Antigua and Barbuda featured on CBS TV Great American Tour

ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Antigua and Barbuda continues to receive significant exposure in the United States as the destination was featured last Thursday, August 29 on the CBS Early Show as part of the Great American Tour.

Antigua and Barbuda was the last destination to be featured in this eight week promotion that took CBS television weatherman Dave Price on a tour to many small towns across America, every Thursday morning.

This week’s tour stopped at Mount Desert Island, off the coast of Maine to a small town called Bar Harbor. Hundreds of residents and visitors in this tourist destination, well known for it’s “Maine lobsters” turned out before 7 a.m. for the live broadcast of the CBS Early Show shot on location in Agamont Park.

Against the backdrop of this sailing community, with a setting very similar to Antigua’s own Falmouth Harbor, Director of Tourism in the United States, Derede Samuel-Whitlock, in a television appearance, presented a 5 night/6day trip at the St James’s Club to Bar Harbor resident, Pete Gould. The recipient had been nominated by a friend for being a mentor to neighborhood kids. Paralyzed for more than eight years, Pete Gould was recognized for being a mentor and big brother to many residents in this small town of only 4500 residents. He was taken by surprise when his name was announced.

The Great American Tour promotion honors deserving citizens who were nominated by friends, relatives and coworkers. They are described as “people who deserve a break and carry an enormous load without complaint.”

For the past eight weeks, producers of the Early Show awarded a week-long trip to a Caribbean destination to a unsuspecting deserving citizen.

This national broadcast reaches over 4 million viewers throughout the United States and can also be viewed at: http://www.cbsnews.com/sections/i_video/main500251.shtml?id=3220124n

Derede Samuel-Whitlock , US Director of Tourism commented, “Antigua and Barbuda is proud to be associated with positive family and community recognition that this program engenders This was also a great way to jump start our fall promotions.”
