“An Evening of Jazz” to feature hottest jazz musicians in free community concert in Miami

MIAMI GARDENS – Another soulful evening of music is coming up with Commissioner Barbara Jordan’s Music in the Park series. Like the previous concerts she has sponsored, the commissioner will bring “An Evening of Jazz” to Miami Carol City Park, 3201 NW 185 Street, in Miami Gardens featuring world class performers on Friday, May 1, 2009 from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Residents are invited to attend this event free of charge, and bring their folding chairs and blankets to enjoy the smooth sounds of artists like steel pan virtuoso and international jazz musician, Othello Molineaux; jazz and blues great, Yvonne Brown; the fantastic Andrew Atkinson Quartet; and jazz diva Paulette Dozier.

Partners in this event are the Diaspora Arts Coalition, the Sunshine Jazz Organization of South Florida, and the City of Miami Gardens.

“I am excited to once again host another wonderful evening of music in District 1,” said Commissioner Jordan, visionary of the series. “As we are all navigating our way through these very challenging times, it is my hope that this evening of music and the many other artistic programs we produce in the future will lift the spirits of those who attend. I urge those in my district and beyond to come and enjoy.”

Othello Molineux is widely credited with introducing steel pan to the jazz world. Over the years, he has performed all over the world with such celebrated musicians as Herbie Hancock, Dizzy Gillespie, Monty Alexander and Peter Erskine.

Yvonne Brown is known for her passion-filled, smooth and savory performances, and has been mesmerizing audiences from coast to coast with her brand of sultry music for nearly 30 years. Specializing in jazz, Motown, soul and funk, Yvonne makes every song she sings her own. She has performed extensively throughout the United States, Canada and the Caribbean.

Established in 2006, the Andrew Atkinson Quartet encompasses an all-star cast of musicians who are comfortable with all kinds of amorphous rhythms. Classics such as Miles Davis’ “Blue in Green” become slinky gems peppered with shuffling reggae drums, woozy sax lines, steady bass and off-kilter piano. The originals are even more adventurous, with hard bop energy shooting through elements of Latin, R&B, deep funk, and even drum-n-bass.

Paulette Dozier, a jazz vocal stylist, is featured on several international releases, including two of her own: “With You” and her latest release, “Over & Over Again.” Over the course of her entertainment career, she has broadened her talents to encompass various areas of the arts.
