Air Jamaica celebrates 40th anniversary legacy

MIAMI – Air Jamaica Limited is now celebrating its 40-year legacy since it departed the Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston, April 1, 1969, as the island’s national carrier connecting Jamaica to the world.

To mark this significant milestone in Jamaica’s history, a thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday (Apr. 26) at 4 p.m., at the Christway Baptist Church in Miramar.

Minister of Tourism, Hon. Edmund Bartlett will join Consul General Sandra Grant Griffiths and company executives as well as nationals and friends in the Diaspora.

A service of celebration was also held in New York last week as nationals in the Diaspora share in the accomplishments of Air Jamaica’s legacy.

Among its accomplishments, the airline can boast an outstanding safety record according to airline industry data.

Through its corporate citizenship program, several social groups have benefited from the airline’s community assistance efforts. Many schools, citizen groups, civic associations and churches throughout the Diaspora and across the island have continuously gained from services such as handling of shipments and sponsorship packages.

More importantly, the airline has helped in times of national crises, particularly in times of natural disasters, by transporting relief supplies to help those in need.

Speaking with JIS News, Mrs. Kaye Chong, Manager Community and Special Market Sales, says that safety has always been the primary focus of the airline and today, the airline is proud to hold to industry safety standards during the 40-year period.

As Government remained fully focused on investors for sustaining the airline, Mrs. Chong also expressed pride as she spoke of the encouragement and tenacity of the Air Jamaica team to survive in the industry especially during the global economic downturn.

She also described Air Jamaica as a trendsetter and leader in the aviation industry with the introduction of in-flight fashion show and aerobics during the earlier years of the airline. This, she said, spoke to the creativity and ingenuity of our people.

As the airline strengthens its core routes, Air Jamaica continues to serve destinations in the United States and across the Caribbean.
