Activities planned for International World AIDS Day in The Bahamas
NASSAU, The Bahamas – The Ministry of Health’s HIV/AIDS Centre Resource Committee is working hard to ensure all activities for International World AIDS Day are successful.
This year’s International World AIDS Day will be observed on Friday, December 1, under the theme, “You, Me, Us… Time to Deliver, Stop AIDS, Keep the Promise.”
Mr. James Catalyn, chairperman of the committee, and Mrs. Rosa Mae Bain, co-chairperson and managing director, HIV/AIDS Centre, met with other members of the committee on Friday, November 3, at the Anglican Diocese Office to discuss the events planned to bring awareness to issues related to HIV/AIDS.
The Red Ribbon Ball to be held Saturday, November 25 at Kerzner International Atlantis Ballroom is one of the major events that will kick-off the long list of activities.
A school assembly will be held at Temple Christian School Tuesday, November 28 between 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m. Schools from throughout New Providence will be in attendance, and Picewell Forbes, a former Deputy General Manager, Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas, will conduct a live remote from the school starting at 6:00 a.m.
The World AIDS Day Church Service will be held at The Church of God of Prophecy, East Street, Friday, December 1 from 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.
That same day, participants wearing red T-shirts, will form the symbol of the red ribbon on Rawson Square from 10:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. The event, funded by Colina Imperial and the AIDS Foundation, will be filmed from a helicopter by the Counsellors Limited.
Later a concert by Eldridge McPhee and Silent Auction will be held at Government House in support of the AIDS Foundation.
On Saturday, December 2 at 6:00 a.m., a World AIDS Day Walk will commence at four separate locations.
One of the final events will be the showing of HIV/AIDS films by the Bahamas International Film Festival at Galleria Cinemas RND Plaza JFK on Sunday, December 10.
Activities are also planned for the Family Islands in conjunction with health clinics, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, government employees and volunteers.
