HAMILTON, Bermuda – In a moving statement of solidarity with the people of Haiti Bermuda’s Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, the Hon. Paula A. Cox, said Bermuda joined with other nations in mourning the tragic loss of so many lives as a result of the devastating earthquake which had shattered Port-Au-Prince and had made homeless thousands of people.
Minister Cox said that, Bermuda’s insurance sector which had helped channel funds to nations in need so many times in the past stood ready. Bermuda’s help, she said, would not be just through charitable assistance – that was a given – but in a wider sense through its financial support of regional associations like the Caribbean Catastrophe Risk Insurance Facility (the “CCRIF”) in which Bermuda was a donor country. “We are proud of our association with the CCRIF but never more so then today. We pray for Haiti and take some comfort in knowing that our participation will help in bringing immediate and long-term support to a country and the people so much in need. I have no doubt, as well, that Bermuda’s spirit is one that will drive our people to help Haiti in so many other ways in this time of its greatest need,” the Minister said.
