Black/Caribbean-American non-profits among $1 million in grants by The Miami Foundation
MIAMI – Among the 65 local non-profits and community organizations awarded $1 million in grants as part of The Miami Foundation’s 2013 Community Grants Program, a handful of those grantees were black non-profits and/or those serving the black community. Of course, this means everything to non-profits particularly for black non-profits who are usually disproportionately funded yet the community needs are usually larger.
World-record holder and Jamaican Barrington Irving’s Experience Aviation who was awarded grant funds in the $15,000 – $19,999 category. His organization recently received a lot of media attention for his supercar vs. jet race in May and was also recently invited by NASA to race the car again at Kennedy Space Center
Haitian-American Gepsie Metellus’s Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center with funding in the $20,000 – $25,000 category
Andrea Ivory’s Women’s Breast Health Initiative with funding in the $20,000 – $25,000 category
Overtown Youth Center received funding in the $20,000 – $25,000 category
Although not a black non-profit, the Miami Children’s Initiative serving Liberty City received funding in the $15,000 – $19,999.
