The Haitian Lawyers Association joins the Florida Immigrant Coalition to help naturalize 100 legal permanent residents in Broward County

MIAMI – The Haitian Lawyers Association and the Florida Immigrant Coalition (FLIC) are getting together to host a free citizenship clinic to support Haitian and other Caribbean legal permanent residents (LPRs) living in Broward County with their citizenship application.

FLIC launched the “Florida New Americans” citizenship program, and so far we have already held five (5) successful citizenship clinics in downtown Miami, Little Haiti, North Miami and Homestead, serving over 900 LPRs and finalizing nearly 500 citizenship applications. Some of the first applicants have already become New Americans!

Is this a necessary effort? The numbers speak for themselves. By 2011 there were 12,630,000 LPRs in the United States, and over 8 million were eligible to naturalize. In Florida alone, there are 1,210,000 LPRS and 710,000 were eligible for Citizenship by 2010. However, nationwide, less than a million LPRs actually apply for Citizenship every year, and in Florida only 87,000 LPRs naturalized in 2011.

More information about Haitians and Latinos applying for citizenship in Florida can be found here: http://flnewamericans.org/lprs-in-florida.html

The free citizenship clinic will take place on Saturday, October 20th from 11:00 a.m. to 2 p.m.
at the Abundant Living Ministries, 14331 SW 72nd Street (Old Sheridan Road), Pembroke Pines, FL.
