5000 Role Models of Excellence Project – 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Scholarship Breakfast
MIAMI – The 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project will host its 20th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Unity Scholarship Breakfast on Friday, January 18, 2013, at 8:30 a.m., at Jungle Island-Treetop Ballroom, 1111 Parrot Jungle Trail. The annual signature fundraising event and celebration brings together members of South Florida’s diverse community to commemorate the life and teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as well as to demonstrate community-wide support of the 20-year mentoring program.
Author, entrepreneur, and award-winning actor Malik Yoba will keynote the event. Yoba recently completed production of the television movie Betty and Correta, where he portrays the civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The movie is scheduled for release February 2013.
“This year marks a milestone for the 5000 Role Models of Excellence program,” said its founder Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson. “For two decades we have been committed to transforming the lives of at-risk boys, giving them the skills and financial resources to succeed in school, beyond high school graduation.”
“Our Role Model mentors represent a cross-section of South Florida’s community,” Wilson added. “They are doctors, lawyers, educators, college professors, judges, law enforcement officials, elected officials and every career background that you can imagine. They have been absolutely pivotal to the 20-year success of the Role Models program.”
The annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Scholarship Breakfast raises money for scholarships for graduating seniors of the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Project. The program has awarded millions in scholarships since its founding in 1993 by then School Board Member Frederica S. Wilson.
