Miami Dade College to Host Major Voter Registration Rally Sept. 23 with Key Local and National Partners

Special National Voter Registration Day event will encourage voter registration and participation in advance of November General Election

MIAMI –To celebrate National Voter Registration Day, Miami Dade College (MDC) will join several key local and national partners to host a major rally to encourage voter registration and participation Tues., Sept. 23, 2014, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., at its downtown Wolfson Campus. A noon program will feature college officials, student government representatives, partners, elected officials and celebrities.

This single, national day of effort with concurrent events in major US cities is made possible with the support of many partners including Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance Education Fund, Bus Federation Civic Fund, Fair Elections Legal Network, League of Women Voters, Nonprofit VOTE, Rock the Vote, TurboVote, and Voto Latino. Additional partners in South Florida include the Knight Foundation, local colleges and universities, The Miami-Dade Department of Elections, Royal Caribbean, the Florida Alliance, and Univision Channel 23. The day is particularly important because it takes place two weeks prior to the Oct. 6 deadline to register to vote for the November 4 General Election. In addition to activities, MDC will have computers and other technology available to facilitate voter registration and information.

“This event will bring much needed attention to the importance of not only registering to vote but also to make sure young people vote in all elections,” said MDC Wolfson Campus President Dr. José A. Vicente. “At MDC, we are honored to play a role in such an important effort.”

In 2012, MDC hosted a similar event titled Making Democracy Count in partnership with TurboVote that saw thousands of students converge at the Wolfson Campus and hundreds register to vote. In addition, MDC will provide other opportunities throughout the month of September for students to register to vote and learn about key issues on the ballot.
