US Congressman Meeks launches the OAS Caucus with support of OAS Secretary General Insulza

WASHINGTON – The Secretary General of the Organization of American States, José Miguel Insulza, met today with US Congressman Gregory Meeks (D-NY) to discuss the launching of the Organization of American States Congressional Caucus at the US Congress.

Congressman Meeks took the initiative to launch the Caucus stating that “the time is ripe to shape a more productive relationship between the United States and our neighbors in the Americas. As we prepare for the Fifth Summit of the Americas in April this year, it is important to recall that these nations are our largest trading partners and their peoples share historical, cultural and family connections with the United States.”

Secretary General Insulza enthusiastically embraced the idea of the new Caucus and offered to work closely with Congressman Meeks and other members of the Caucus to establish an ongoing dialogue between the US Congress and the ambassadors and senior officials of the OAS. The first planned activity of the Caucus will be a discussion hosted by the Secretary General to discuss the results of the Fifth Summit of the Americas.
