University of the West Indies (UWI) to play in American College Cricket Championship

LAUDERHILL – American College Cricket is pleased to announce that the University of the West Indies (UWI) and the USA Under 19 World Cup Team will participate as “Special Guests” in the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship.

The Championship will be held on March 17-21, 2010 at the Central Broward Regional Park near Ft Lauderdale, Florida.The Park features North America’s only ICC ODI-Certified Cricket Stadium, as well as two side-fields, with picnic areas.The Semi-Finals and the Final will be played in the Stadium on Sunday, March 21, 2010, and will be webcast.

Cricket players from colleges across the USA will head to South Florida to compete for the Shiv Chanderpaul Trophy, including 2009 Champions Montgomery College, USC (Trojans), Ohio State, U of Minnesota, Auburn and many more.

The University of the West Indies will add an International flavor to the Championship and US College Cricketers are eager to see how they match up against the powerful West Indies squad. Pro Vice Chancellor of UWI Sir Hilary Beckles said “We are very eager to participate and to lend our support to this project. Our boys are very excited about the prospect….and are looking forward to the competition ” UWI Director of Sports and former Test player Roland Butcher will accompany the Team.

The USA Under 19 World Cup Team, recently returned from the World Cup in New Zealand, is comprised mainly of College Freshmen who relish this opportunity to play with and against their College peers. Their participation is a fulfillment of USA Cricket CEO Don Lockerbie’s promise to “keep the Team actively playing beyond their Under 19 days”.

At the 2010 American College Cricket Spring Break Championship, Spring Breakers and cricket fans will be able to see exciting 20/20 cricket action, as well as enjoy what South Florida (Home of the 2010 Pro Bowl and Super Bowl) has to offer – a first class tourist and sports destination offering beautiful beaches in Ft Lauderdale, outstanding cricket facilities in Lauderhill and the world famous nightlife of South Beach and Miami.
