University of Miami, Haitian Student Organization’s Unity Day – Nov. 13

CORAL GABLES – The Haitian Student Organization of the University of Miami is hosting a Unity Day event on Saturday, November 13 from 5pm to 10pm at the University of Miami Communication School Courtyard (5100 Brunson Dr Coral Gables FL, 33124).

Unity Day is a free, open event to the UM community as well as the Miami and South Florida community. Unity Day is a celebration of Haitian Culture and History and this year’s theme is Haiti: Past, Present and Future.

In November, Planet Kreyol annually hosts this massive affair of culture and community enlightenment under a unifying theme that affects the Haitian community as a whole.

Unity Day showcases numerous aspects of our Haitian culture and this is explored through famous guest speakers, art exhibits, performances by local artists among other activities. In continuing this tradition, we are happy to present you with this year’s theme, “Haiti: Past, Present, and Future,” where we will attempt highlight our history, bring light to Haiti’s present, and share our hope for the future.

The event is planned to go as follows: African Student’s Union dance troupe, the dance troupe from the Haitian American Youth Organization, a pop girl group called S4U, a poet named Marly Gervais, a documentary and speech from Professor of Anthropology Louis Herns Marcelin, a hip-hop duo named TPO and Grusome, and a konpa band called Xtassy.

While the event does have an entertainment component, they are also going to highlight Haiti’s history, its present state, and how we can mobilize to assist the nation. They will also be collecting donations from guests for SAVE509.org, a non-profit organization that has been working with earthquake victims since the catastrophe.

Unity Day sponsors include, African Student’s Union, the University Center, the Office of Academic Enhancement, HP Productions, and Nopin for their participation and assistance with this event.
