Trinidadian Government to fund T&T cricketers in India

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – The Trinidad and Tobago cricket team will receive $4.88 million to assist in their participation in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament to be hosted in India from September 23 to October 9.

Minister of Sport Anil Roberts said the T&T team was preparing for the tournament and government will fully support their preparations and stay in India.

At the post cabinet press conference at the Office of the Prime Minister, the Minister said “it’s a lot (of money) but understand that as we diversify, sport tourism is a major thrust of People’s Partnership Government.

“We must market Trinidad and Tobago in the best way through our brilliant sportsmen for their team work and camaraderie”.

He said team captain Darren Ganga will during the tournament also carry out his role as a sport ambassador to make contact with different IPL franchises to not only play in competitions but to encourage them to T&T for training sessions.

He said discussions will be held on Friday with Ganga, Dinanath Ramnarine and a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board to discuss the expenditure and to ensure there is transparency is upheld.

The Minister urged citizens to support the team.
