Trinidad & Tobago’s Prime Minister diagnosed with cancer

PORT OF SPAIN, Trinidad – Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced that his doctors had discovered a malignant tumour in his left kidney during a routine medical screening last week.

The Prime Minister is scheduled to undergo surgery next Thursday or Friday (Dec 18 or 19) at the Semex Hospital in Cuba.

Speaking at the post-Cabinet news conference yesterday, Manning said, “the tumour was discovered in its early stages and so surgical removal is all that is required. No further treatment subsequent to that (is needed)”.

Manning will be in Cuba for at least two weeks recovering from the surgical procedure.

All leave requests by ministers had been canceled with immediate effect and all ambassadors had been mandated to stay at their posts until he returns to Trinidad and Tobago.
