The City of Miami and World Vision Announce Partnership to Bring Relief to Haiti

MIAMI – The City of Miami and World Vision, an international relief organization, are proud to announce a long-term partnership to bring relief to Haiti as the country moves into its recovery and rebuilding efforts after being struck by a series of devastating hurricanes.

Thanks to a matching grant from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), every financial gift made to World Vision is multiplied three times through USAID’s Food for Peace program. For example, a gift of $1,000 will provide $3,000 worth of high-energy food supplements for children and families devastated by the floods.

“I urge everyone in our community to open their hearts and their wallets to help our neighbors,” said Mayor of Miami, Manny Diaz. “The situation in the island is still critical, and there is a desperate need for basic necessities as well as partners to help the country rebuild.”

A fundraising reception was held on Thursday, October 30 at the Doubletree Grand Hotel – Biscayne Bay in Miami. All proceeds raised will go toward World Vision’s food aid response in Haiti.

“World Vision is grateful for the outpouring of generosity from the people of Miami to help the children and families of Haiti,” said Lisa Torres, World Vision’s area director for South Florida. “Cash donations are a quick and efficient way to bring hurricane survivors the emergency aid they so urgently need.”

World Vision’s staff in Haiti already provided emergency food aid to more than 18,000 people in the country in the weeks following the storms. The staff also provided clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, water, cooking utensils, shelter materials, and medicine. World Vision continues to expand its relief and recovery work, and in the town of Posbaiemarose, World Vision is working to restore access to clean water to approximately 56,500 people.

In September, a team from World Vision and “Operation: Hope for Haiti” traveled from Miami to Haiti to deliver nearly 50,000 pounds of donated food and water to the communities most affected. In addition, World Vision and the City of Miami collected close to $50,000 in cash donations to help with World Vision’s emergency food aid efforts in that country. In addition, World Vision and the City of Miami collected close to $60,000 in cash donations to help with World Vision’s emergency food aid efforts in that country.

“Operation: Hope for Haiti” was created with the help of City of Miami Commissioner Michelle Spence-Jones in response to the devastation left after the country was hit by several hurricanes this summer. Tens of thousands of people remain in need of emergency assistance. World Vision will continue to work with the greater Miami community to help Haiti and other countries in the Caribbean.
