The Air Jamaica World Championship Of Dominoes returns to Jamaica’s Tourism Capital

KINGSTON, Jamaica – On October 18-21 the Air Jamaica World Championship of Dominoes will present “Dominoes on the Beach” at the Holiday Inn Sunspree Resort.

The tournament, which has been staged six times since its inception in 1999, will return to its traditional setting on the island’s north coast.

The tournament brings in over 600 visitors to the island for the four-day period.

Over the years, the tournament has seen competitors from many different countries. From the United States, California, Florida, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia and Maryland have all been represented. Players from the Caribbean including the Dominican Republic, Grenada, Saint Lucia, Anguilla, Antigua, The Bahamas, Barbados, Cayman Islands, Cuba, Curacao, Dominica and Turks and Caicos have traditionally been participants in this exciting tournament. More recently players from Toronto, London, Mexico, Panama and Venezuela have also tried their luck. This year it is expected that entrants from as far as Spain may also test their skills in a sport that is gaining international recognition.

When asked why the return to Montego Bay, Paul Pennicook, Senior Vice President for Marketing and Sales for Air Jamaica explained; “While the players enjoyed themselves during the competition held in Kingston in 2004, they prefer the tournament being on the north coast as it allows them to add a vacation for their family and friends. Some come not only for the tournament, but extend their stay to relax and enjoy the island.

In addition, the family members who accompany them are able to visit the beach and other attractions on the north coast while the games are going on.”

The dates of the tournament were deliberately chosen to give a boost to the local hotels and the travel trade at a time that is traditionally a slow period in the tourist industry.

Registration for the October tournament will begin mid-September. Forms will be available at Air Jamaica city ticket offices in Kingston and Montego Bay as well as at Touchstone Productions Limited, 72B Hope Road, Kingston 6.
