Technical Help For UTT
Port of Spain – Trinidad’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Knowlson Gift, says continued technical cooperation in energy, agricultural research, and culture, are avenues for deepening and strengthening bilateral relations between Trinidad and Tobago and India.
In welcoming new Indian High Commissioner, Jagit Singh Sapra during a courtesy call by the former earlier this month, Minister Gift said India could also provide technical expertise in education to the University of Trinidad and Tobago.
The High Commissioner promised to continue building on the good relations developed by his predecessor, Virendra Gupta, whose tour of duty ended on August 28.
He mentioned the good work being done by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through its High Commissioner in New Delhi, India, Pundit Maniedeo Persad who has been instrumental in hosting a business conference and organizing a Trinidad and Tobago-style Carnival in New Delhi.
Trinidad and Tobago and India established diplomatic relations in 1962. That same year India opened its High Commission in Trinidad and Tobago which set up its diplomatic office in New Delhi in 1969.
Further linkages between Trinidad and Tobago and India were recently established during a CARICOM-India Economic Forum, which was held at the Centre of Excellence in Tunapuna. The forum provided the opportunity for small and medium enterprises from India to interact with their CARICOM business colleagues, in an effort to promote Indian products such as pharmaceuticals, sport goods, automobile spare parts and information communication technology.
