St. Kitts and Nevis PM says his fourth-term Labour Cabinet will reflect maturity and “new blood”

BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas says his historic fourth-term Labour Party Cabinet will reflect the maturity of the new administration.

He said the new Cabinet will be reflective of the general views of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis as to how they spoke in the 25th January 2010 poll.

“We would want it to be a Cabinet and a Government of all of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, making sure that we would select the best of whom are available and put them to the task of collectively managing their fields of the entire country so that the people of St. Kitts and Nevis can benefit in terms of having the quality of lives of our people improved,” said Dr. Douglas.

He said all re-elected members will serve in the Cabinet including the two new successful candidates who will add “new blood and new energy into the Cabinet of Ministers.”

The St. Kitts and Nevis Leader, who was sworn in as Prime Minister for a fourth straight term on January 26th disclosed in an interview with his Press Secretary, Mr. Erasmus Williams that the social development agenda of the Labour Party in government shall continue.

“We believe that we have already identified the appropriate persons in the Cabinet to pursue vigorously that agenda,” said Dr. Douglas.

“The economic challenges faced, especially as a result of the global economic and financial crisis, are expected to continue to some extent and that is why it would need maturity, it would need to have some measure of continuity to ensure that the financial agenda, the economic development agenda as well as the government continue apace,” said Dr. Douglas, who spoke from Tripoli, where he held discussions with Libyan Government officials.

He said that St. Kitts and Nevis will need strong financial support for the development agenda. “That’s why I took the decision, especially after receiving the personal invitation from Ambassador Arleene who came to my Swearing-In Ceremony last week Wednesday, to accept the invitation to be in Tripoli to have bi-lateral discussions with the government of Libya,” said Dr. Douglas.

Describing Sunday’s Swearing-In Ceremony as an unprecedented occasion, Prime Minister Douglas used the opportunity to again thank the people of St. Kitts and Nevis for the confidence that they have demonstrated in his St.Kitts-Nevis Labour Party and in particular “in my leadership to lead the country for a fourth consecutive term and giving me and all of us the opportunity as leaders to really continue on the development agenda that they have mapped out especially in 2005 when we closed the sugar industry.”

“I think that this is a very privilege that we have and I again commit myself to the task and I say to the people of St. Kitts and Nevis, I pray to God that I shall not squander his goodwill and the goodwill of the people of St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Douglas.
