St. Kitts and Nevis nationals urged to be part of economic transformation

BASSETERRE, ST. KITTS, AUGUST 5TH 2010 (CUOPM) – As additional phases of the US$2.5 billion Christophe Harbour Development come on stream, St. Kitts and Nevis Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas is encouraging citizens to be bold, to take the initiative, to get involved and to think ahead and of a brighter future.

“There is room for everyone to be a part of the economic transformation that is taking place in this country. We must all plan and strategize through these tough economic times, with the knowledge that better times will come,” said Dr. Douglas.

Speaking at the ground breaking ceremony to start construction of the US$7 million Beach Club at Sandy Bank Bay on St. Kitts’ South East Peninsular, Prime Minister Hon. Dr. Denzil L. Douglas said the project will have substantial spin-off effects that would ripple throughout the entire economy, with additional investment opportunities, strengthening the existing service industry and giving rise to a greater entrepreneurial climate in St. Kitts and Nevis.

“As such, this type of tourism development would play its role in raising the standard of living for citizens and residents,” Dr. Douglas said.

“Our local contractors and construction workforce will be engaged in a very active way, even though the main or leading contractor comes from outside the country. This government has insisted that our local contractors must be part and parcel of this development,” said the Prime Minister.

He applauded the Christophe Harbour developers for their commitment to ensuring that environmental compatibility remains in the forefront.

“As a top, world-class development, this area offers a wonderful opportunity to do tourism development right. As the programme progresses, you would see the creation and rebuilding of eco-systems, and the conscious decisions implemented to integrate tourism, people and also integrate them with the environment. This is important, because it addresses issues of sustainable tourism, which is something that my Government is keen on achieving not only in this particular development, but throughout all developments in St. Kitts and Nevis,” said Prime Minister Douglas.

He added that Mr. LeGrand Elebash and his team are working diligently, and the construction of this Beach Club at Sandy Bank Bay is indicative of their commitment to keep the pace up towards project completion.

“Indeed, we share the vision of elevating St. Kitts and Nevis as a well-recognized travel and lifestyle destination, and this phase of the development brings us one step closer to realization of that vision. Obviously, none of this would have been possible without our Kiawah Partners and again I again thank Mr. Buddy Darby for his commitment, his confidence that he has in this government, in this country and in the people of St. Kitts and Nevis to pursue this particular development,” said the St. Kitts and Nevis leader.

Prime Minister Douglas praised all the partners who are contributing to the development of the best resort and gave the people of St. Kitts and Nevis of his government’s continued efforts to build a diversified economy, with a diversified tourism product as the leader.

Christophe Harbour, described as “an Incomparable Resort for St. Kitts,” will be a luxury resort that will propel St. Kitts to the forefront of high-end tourism in the Caribbean. Christophe Harbour Development Company Limited (CHDC), a venture led by Kiawah Development Partners (KDP), is the master developer for Christophe Harbour.

CHDC, Fazio Golf Course Designers, Inc., and several prominent hotel, real estate, architecture, environmental, and engineering companies have joined forces to create an incomparable master-planned resort.
