South Florida’s CAMEO medical missions continues

MIAMI – Caribbean American Medical Educational Org. (CAMEO) medical missions have been serving the medically underserved communities in rural areas of the Caribbean since 1993.

On June 17th they will be headed to Dangriga, Belize, returning on the 25th, and the team of medical personnel will be joined by a nurse from Canada, who is making her second trip as well as students from the Florida State University.

Earlier this year a team of 26, consisting of Doctors nurses and students from Florida State University visited Jamaica and offered services to 1000 patients seen at various clinics. The team was divided in two groups one to Buff Bay, Portland. led by Dr Steve La Rosa of Tallahassee, and the other group went to Vere Clarendon led by Dr David Keen of Tallahassee and Medical Director of CAMEO.

The clinics in Vere were set up in churches and schools in Rocky Point. Portland Cottage and Mitchell Town while the St Johns Baptist Church hosted the team. In Portland CAMEO visited clinics at the Salvation Army Church The Infirmary Fruitful Vale Orange Bay Hope Bay and the Golden Agers in Buff Bay.

CAMEO was able to raise and donate $10,000 dollars worth of medication and equipment and made donations to Port Anntonio and Buff Bay Hospitals.

In addition to providing medical services, the students gained valuable experiences, both culturally and educationally that will enable them to be aware of their future career in the Medical field and in particular in rural medicine.

CAMEO’s second medical mission to Jamaica is scheduled for July 8-18 and the third in October 2006.
