South Florida Organizations teaming up to respond to Haiti’s call for help

MIAMI – Successive hurricanes have deeply impacted Haiti, destroying its agricultural sector and infrastructure and thwarting the inhabitants’ efforts to achieve self-sufficiency.

Just as Haitians were starting to recover from April’s food crisis, they are now faced with the daunting task of rebuilding their country.

To assist in this effort the Coral Gables Congregational Church is hosting an event in conjunction with three international organizations from South Florida; the Lambi Fund of Haiti, Project Medishare, and FAVACA (the Florida Association for Volunteer Action in the Caribbean and the Americas).

This event represents an unprecedented collaborative effort among three respected and reputable organizations that have worked for years in Haiti and the Coral Gables Congregational Church.

In the aftermath of the hurricanes, the people of Haiti received a tremendous amount of emergency assistance from the United States and the international community. While food and other aid is needed in the short term, additional long-term assistance is required to ensure that communities can continue to meet their present and future need and become less dependent on outside assistance.

Project Medishare, FAVACA and the Lambi Fund of Haiti are active in assisting Haiti build a more sustainable future. The Lambi Fund of Haiti supports its rural partners by providing seeds, tools, animals and credit funds to place them on the path of financial sustainability; Project Medishare offers much needed assistance in the areas of community health care, agricultural support and nutrition; while FAVACA, with its corps of volunteer expertise, responds to requests from Haitian institutions to
Rebuild Haiti, strengthening their hand at managing emergency assistance, repairing their economy and caring for those traumatized by so much tragedy. Funds from “Rebuild Haiti: Mission Possible” will go to further such initiatives.

The “Rebuild Haiti: Mission Possible” fundraiser will take place on November 14th at 6:30 PM at the Coral Gables Congregational Church located at 3010 De Soto, Coral Gables.

The fundraiser will consist of a free event open to the public, hosted by Calvin Hughes, Morning Anchor of WPLG, who has traveled extensively to Haiti. Food and drink will be served.

A major silent auction will offer attendees the opportunity to bid on an exciting array of items including artwork, passes to cultural events, restaurant meals, gift baskets, and numerous other items. All of the donations will go to support this combined relief effort for Haiti.

Coral Gables Congregational Church Associate Pastor Guillermo Marquez-Sterling commented:” Our Haitian brothers and sisters are in need of urgent assistance. Now is the time for us to unite our efforts for them. Now is the time for us to put aside our differences and help the Haitian people help themselves. In the spirit of collaboration, these four organizations are coming together to make a difference. This unprecedented united effort is what is required in order for us to meet the needs of the Haitian people.”
