MIAMI – Organized by the Black Archives History & Research Foundation of South Florida, Inc., and supported by the Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau, Big Bus Miami, the Black Police Precinct and Courthouse Museum and the Little Haiti Cultural Complex, The Black History Month Heritage Tour explores the historic landmarks and neighborhoods that make up Miami-Dade County’s rich and vibrant Black Heritage communities.
The tour will be conducted by Timothy A. Barber – Executive Director of The Black Archives and Florida Memorial University professor of history. It will present facts on the historic importance of landmarks and neighborhoods touched by the African Diaspora and people of color in Miami-Dade County. Tour stops include historic sites from Overtown to Coconut Grove and other neighborhoods including Brownsville, Lemon City, Little Haiti, and Liberty City. As part of the tour, riders will be invited to visit A Man Among the People: A Purvis Homecoming, the largest exhibition of art from Overtown urban expressionist artist, Purvis Young, at The Historic Lyric Theater. Films documenting Overtown’s history will also be screened at the theater throughout the day.
The Black History Month Heritage Tour will depart on February 28, 2015 from 8:00 am and 1:00 pm from the Historic Lyric Theater Cultural Arts Complex located at 819 NW 2nd Avenue, Miami, FL 33136. Each trip should take approximately four hours. Tour costs $10 per person, children five and under is free and must be accompanied by an adult. Tour itinerary is subject to change.
