Rhythms of Africa / Music Around The World to Headline FAMILY FEST at The Adrienne Arsht Center

MIAMI – The Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County is proud to present the fifth consecutive season of FAMILY FEST. The popular family series celebrates the New Year and continues its 2012-2013 season on January 12, 2013 with a “Rhythms of Africa / Music Around The World” theme celebrating diversity, youth and the power of music to bring freedom, hope and harmony to the world.

FAMILY FEST will feature a high-energy performance starring a percussion ensemble from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, led by Willie Stewart and joined by professional musicians. Outdoor activities and performances by local bands and dance troupes will take place at the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza beginning at 11:30 a.m., followed by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami’s 1:30 p.m. performance inside the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Admission is FREE. *

Throughout the day, guests will travel the globe with family-friendly outdoor activities and performances celebrating “Music Around the World!” The event begins at 11:30 a.m. on the Parker and Vann Thomson Plaza with free entertainment including performances, face painting, balloon sculpting, storytelling and more!

The fun moves indoors at 1:30 p.m. with a free performance by youth from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. Third World’s former percussionist and co-director Willie Stewart presents his specially selected youth ensemble in a performance celebrating “Rhythms of Africa / Music Around The World,” a musical journey that describes the movement of ancient rhythms sprung from the souls of vibrant cultures and carried by hand and heart from Africa to the Caribbean and the Americas.

The talented troupe from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, intensely instructed for 9 weeks, joins a band of internationally renowned artists and musicians to celebrate the pulse and rhythms of the African Diaspora. Seasoned by time, cultivated and rooted by generations of pilgrims, these familiar rhythms thrill and invigorate contemporary audiences of all ages.

Admission to FAMILY FEST is FREE. However, First Access Passes are required for the 1:30 p.m. concert in the John S. and James L. Knight Concert Hall. First Access Passes for this performance featuring a percussion ensemble from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Miami, led by Willie Stewart and joined by professional musicians, are available now.

First Access Passes can be reserved in advance by calling the Adrienne Arsht Center box office at 305-949-6722 or online at www.arshtcenter.org (limit four per person). The passes provide patrons with first access to seating in the theater. Seating is “first come, first serve” for the performance and passes do not guarantee a seat.

Patrons who do not have a First Access Pass can join the stand-by line beginning at 12:30 p.m. outside the theater. Patrons in the stand-by line will be let into the theater at 1:15 p.m. if seats are still available.

The First Access Pass expires at 1:15 p.m.
