Program teaches how Broward County Government works

FT. LAUDERDALE – Broward County is now accepting applications from residents for Class III Winter Session of the Broward County Academy, a program that provides a unique opportunity to learn how Broward County Government operates.

During the eight-week, interactive program residents will learn about how county government delivers services to enhance and promote the quality of life for residents, businesses and visitors. The goal of the program is to raise public awareness about County programs and services, and to increase community involvement and participation in local government. The Academy will run from February 7 – March 27, 2008.

To be eligible for the Broward County Academy, applicants must be 18 or older and a Broward County resident. Class III Winter Session will be limited to 30 students. Acceptance will be granted on a first come, first serve basis. There is no registration fee or cost to participants.

Academy Specifics

Sessions will be held every Thursday evening for eight weeks and will culminate with a graduation ceremony. Participants must attend a minimum of six sessions to graduate. Each session will last three hours, starting at 6 p.m. and ending at 9 p.m. Academy sessions will offer a mix of lecture presentation, interactivity and tours.

Participants will experience the behind-the-scenes operations of the Port and Airport, see the Emergency Operations Center in action, learn about recreational and cultural opportunities, as well as the County’s role in providing public transportation, human services, environmental protection and economic development.

Lesson Plan

The lesson plan will consist of the following eight sessions:

Session 1: February 7 – Public Communications

Session 2: February 14 – Community Services & Office of Transportation

Session 3: February 21 – Port Everglades

Session 4: February 28 – Planning/Redevelopment and Environmental Protection

Session 5: March 6 – Human Services

Session 6: March 13 – Emergency Management

Session 7: March 20 – Aviation and Economic Development

Session 8: March 27 – Tourism, Economic Development and Graduation
