Kingston, Jamaica – (JIS) – Former Vice Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Rex Nettleford, will deliver the main address at the second installment of the Caribbean International Network (CIN), lecture series on Thursday, October 20 at the historic Schomburg Centre for Research in Black Culture on Malcolm X Boulevard in Harlem, New York.
Professor Nettleford, one of Jamaica’s prominent intellectuals, will be speaking on the theme: ‘The Caribbean Diversity: A Defining Point in the History of the Americas’.
Last year’s speaker was Jamaican born Marcus Garvey Scholar and Professor of History at the University of California, Los Angeles, Robert Hill, who highlighted the contributions made by Marcus Garvey, the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) and Harlem and New York to Caribbean cultural and political thought.
Stephen Hill, Chief Executive Officer of CIN TV explained the rationale behind the CIN’s Caribbean Lecture Series. “The series is in keeping with the aim of sharing the rich culture of the African peoples throughout the Diaspora. It is also our aim to showcase the intellectual accomplishment of our Caribbean people,” he said.
Last year’s inaugural lecture was placed in the middle of Harlem Week, a mid-September celebration of Black history. Guests included Jamaica’s Consul General to New York, Dr. Basil Bryan and President of the Harlem Chamber of Commerce, Lloyd Williams.
