President-Elect Obama Invites Mayors To Announcement on Economic Stimulus Package

WASHINGTON, D.C. – President-Elect Barack Obama has invited a delegation of U.S. Mayors led by Miami Mayor and U.S. Conference of Mayors President Manny Diaz to join him on Thursday at George Mason University in Fairfax, VA, for a major announcement on his economic stimulus plan for America.

Mayors have stressed that investing in MainStreet metropolitan economies, which comprise 90% of our gross domestic product and drive the national economy, is the most direct path to creating jobs and stimulating the business that can begin to reverse the current economic downturn.

Mayors say metro infrastructure projects can start quickly because the funding for them can come directly to their cities through existing funding channels. Hundreds of mayors from across the country have already identified and presented thousands of “ready-to-go” projects to President-Elect Obama that could create over a million jobs and improve the basic infrastructure of cities and metropolitan regions with federal investment.
