November 30 is deadline to submit applications for 2007 GraceKennedy Birthright Programme

KINGSTON, Jamaica – University students of Jamaican heritage, who live in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada, have until November 30, to submit applications for the 2007 GraceKennedy Jamaican Birthright Programme.

Introduced in December 2003, the programme is the brainchild of Douglas Orane, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of GraceKennedy, and aims to strengthen links with second and third generation Jamaicans in the Diaspora.

“This programme is a direct response to the yearning by the second and third generation Diaspora to claim their Jamaican heritage,” Mr. Orane said.

The two-month programme, from June to August, is a cultural and professional internship geared at highlighting all aspects of Jamaican life, while furthering the career goals of the selected candidates.

Six students will be chosen for the 2007 programme, will work on a rotation basis within the GraceKennedy group of companies, where they will gain hands-on experience in their chosen career field, while being mentored by members of the group’s management.

To add to the cultural experience, candidates will be taken on a variety of weekend excursions to historical sites, beaches, famous landmarks and interact with cultural icons. At the end of the internship, the candidates would have gained a well-rounded Jamaican experience and return home as ambassadors for Jamaica.

To be selected for the programme, candidates must be pursuing either an undergraduate or graduate degree programme; must have a ‘B’ average or higher; and must have Jamaican parents or grandparents.

They should be between the ages of 18 to 30 years old, and not have lived in Jamaica for any period of time exceeding six months.

Digicel Jamaica Limited and SuperClubs Resorts have joined the programme as corporate partners, to provide the interns with an unforgettable experience while in Jamaica.
