NEW YORK – The first in a series of conversations with key Diaspora communities in the United States of America (USA), was launched at the Consulate General of Jamaica, in New York, on November 17.
Aimed at promoting critical thinking concerning the further development of the Jamaican Diaspora Movement, the event featured speakers from the Irish American community.
The conversation, themed: ‘From Immigrant Community to Diaspora Movement, the Irish Americans: a Case Study’, and sponsored by Moet Hennessy, looked at the experience of the Irish and their progress toward national development.
The discussion featured presentations by Ambassador and Consul General of Ireland to the USA, Niall Burgess, and Chief Operating Officer of Moet Hennessy, Jim Clerkin, with emphasis on how the Irish used education as a tool in the development of the Diaspora.
For the second in the series of conversations, in January, presenters will look at the development of India.
The Consulate General of Jamaica is hosting the series, spearheaded by Consul General, Geneive Brown Metzger, in collaboration with the Jamaica Diaspora Advisory Board of the North East USA, and the Organisation for International Development (OID).(JIS)
