Miami Dems Call on Congress to Protect the Right to Vote

MIAMI – In a startling setback for civil and voting rights in the U.S., conservative justices on the Supreme Court today struck down the core of the Voting Rights Act – a law that for decades has protected the vote for millions living in states with a history of voter suppression.

“We saw in 2012, as clearly as ever, Republicans attempting to silence voters in areas across the country,” said Miami-Dade Dems chair Annette Taddeo-Goldstein. “Voters in South Florida understand all too well the need for lasting voter protections – to ensure that no person is ever denied his or her right to vote simply on the basis of skin color or country of origin.”

The Miami-Dade Democrats stand with Democrats and civil rights groups nationwide in calling on Congress to move swiftly and decisively to reinstate a coverage provision and protect voters against the continuing threat of discrimination.
