Miami-Dade’s Election Department put new voting machines through thorough testing

MIAMI – The Miami-Dade County Elections Department conducted a thorough examination today of the new optical scan voting equipment in preparation for the November 4 General Election.

During the “Logic and Accuracy Test,” paper ballots were voted according to a predetermined outcome, and then ballots were tabulated and reconciled to ensure the votes were captured accurately. As in past elections, testing went beyond state law requirements. All equipment performed as expected, and the Department is well on its way to being “Election Ready.”

From opening the equipment to transmitting and tabulating results, every step of the process was recreated and analyzed to ensure the equipment is able to perform under rigorous testing that simulates an actual election.

“The best way to test our equipment is to replicate Election Day conditions, and that is what we have done prior to each and every election,” said Supervisor of Elections Lester Sola, “and this is just one of the many extensive efforts we make to demonstrate the reliability of our equipment.”

During Early Voting, which runs from October 20 to November 2, 120 voting units will be deployed to 20 early voting sites, and 1,538 units will be deployed to the 764 precincts on Election Day.
