Miami-Dade Commissioner Commissioner Edmonson celebrates anniversary of creation of Haitian flag
MIAMI – Miami-Dade County Commissioner Audrey M. Edmonson commemorated the 207th anniversary of the Haitian flag by sending a special message of congratulations to Haitians here and throughout the world at the May18, 2010 County Commission meeting.
“Today we celebrate the creation of the Haitian flag,” Commissioner Edmonson said. “Back in 1803, black men and women on the island of Hispaniola, fighting to live free, took the French flag, a symbol of repression and removed the white part. This new flag became the proud banner of the first black republic in the world.
“I join Haitians around the world in commemorating this occasion while reflecting on the future of their beloved nation which was devastated by earthquake on January 12,” Commissioner Edmonson said. “I believe in the resiliency of the Haitian people and pledge to continue my efforts to help its citizens, and the Haitian community of Miami-Dade County, rebuild a stronger and more prosperous Haiti.”
