MIA continues to rank among world’s top airports

(Miami-Dade County, FL) – Miami International Airport (MIA) continues to rank among the top airports in the world, according to recently released information from Airports Council International (ACI) Worldwide and 2004 calendar-year airport traffic reports.

MIA ranked third in international passengers and 15th in total passengers among U.S. airports, with 30.2 million passengers in 2004 – a two-percent increase from 2003. Among airports worldwide, MIA is 27th in total passengers and 28th in international passengers.

The Airport maintained its position in 2004 as the top U.S. airport for international freight, with 1.6 million tons of freight – an 11-percent increase over 2003. MIA also continues to be the fourth-leading airport for total freight traffic and the third-leading airport for total cargo (freight and mail) in the U.S. Among airports worldwide, MIA ranks eighth for total freight and international freight, and ninth for total cargo.

“MIA continues to be a worldwide leader in international passengers and cargo,” said Aviation Director José Abreu, P.E. “As we introduce more flights with lower fares and complete our expansion program, we look forward to adding to our success with a ground swell of domestic travelers.”

ACI Worldwide, based in Geneva, Switzerland, collects and reports data on passengers, cargo and aircraft operations for more than 500 airports throughout the world.
