BASSETERRE, St. Kitts – Teh Government of St. Kitts has approved a proposal for the development of a medical university and university hospital on St. Kitts.
Minister of State for Information, Sen. the Hon. Nigel Carty said approval in principle had already been given by the Educational Institutions Accreditation Board for the establishment of the new medical school.
“The university hospital envisaged under this project will offer procedures not currently available at our local hospitals, and which many of our citizens have had to access abroad,” said Minister.
He disclosed that the facility will largely cater to the overseas market, thereby opening up the medical tourism subsector.
“A tourism sector that is built on these kinds of services will be robust, and will respond more favorably to fluctuations to the global economic climate,” said Minister Carty.
He said that Cabinet is careful to note the success of the government in attracting and facilitating the development of medical schools in the Federation, and emphasizes the impact that this kind of activity is having on the construction sector, the tourism sector and the overall demand for goods and services in the country.
St. Kitts already hosts The Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine, The International University of Health Sciences (IUHS), Windsor University School of Medicine, The International University of Graduate Studies (IUGS), St. Theresa’s Medical University, The Robert Ross International University of Nursing and the University of Medicine and Health Sciences. The Medical University of the Americas is based in Nevis.
