Land of the Mermaids”, Jamaican style

Maxine Hylton’s new children’s book, “Land of the Mermaids”, captures the imagination of children of all ages as it tells the fictional story of how the island of Jamaica acquired its name. It takes young readers on an exciting journey through history utilizing fantasy and make – believe. It ultimately climaxes with a delightful unexpected ending. Land of the Mermaids is the first in a series of books Ms. Hylton is currently publishing.

Land of the Mermaids, which is her first children’s book, was born from Maxine’s desire to write books that children of color could identify with. Far too frequently she found that most of the fairytales were written from a Western viewpoint. The heroes and heroines were never of African descent. As a mother, she knew the importance of raising her young boys with a positive self image. Therefore, during her spare time at work, she wrote stories that she would later read to her two young children at night.

“I write stories that highlight good morals, but I introduce it in a fun way so that the young reader will not be bored”, said Maxine.

The beautiful, lush green hills of Jamaica is where this mother, author, and poet Maxine Hylton calls home. She is the seventh child of Clifford and Lydia Hylton of Clarendon, Jamaica. As a child, Maxine was inspired to write after listening to the delightful tales told to her by her parents. When their reservoirs of stories were depleted they would create their own stories to keep young Maxine entertained.

Hylton is currently residing in South Florida and was a former member of the Jamaican Police Force. She is the leader of several youth clubs, in which she organized fundraisers, educational and entertaining events for young people. Maxine Hylton is married with two teenage sons Odaine and Oshane. She is the president of Books are Oakkay Inc, a book distribution company.

Maxine says, “My aim was to create beautiful fairytales that all children can relate to especially those of African descent.”
