Jamaican Women of Florida launch with Beverley Manley-Duncan

FT. LAUDERDALE – Recently a fraternity of Jamaican women, friends and acquaintances, came together, and pondered about ways they could give back to the next generation of young women; hence, the birth of the Jamaican Women of Florida, Inc., (JWOF), a group of accomplished and professional women in the South Florida community.

The Jamaican Women of Florida, Inc., (JWOF) a Florida not-for-profit organization will hosts its launch on Friday, April 19, 2013, at a fund-raising luncheon (11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.) at the Broward Convention Center, 1950 Eisenhower Blvd., Port Everglades, FL 33316.

Mrs. Beverley Manley-Duncan, renowned gender specialist, social activist and author will be guest speaker and will share experiences and insights, connecting us to the theme of the luncheon “Breaking Barriers – Building Bridges”. Known for her enlightening and electrifying commentaries and perspectives, Mrs. Manley-Duncan is also a respected trailblazer for the advancement for women in Jamaica, and at regional and international levels.

As this organization moves forward with an agenda of activities on enrichment, JWOF will provide an outlet for Jamaican women in Florida to empower themselves through networking, mentoring and personal development. “The goal of JWOF is to give back to the next generation of young women by assisting in the development of leadership and personal skills to operate in a global environment”, said President, Dahlia Walker-Huntington, attorney and community activist also known for her passion for development and transformation for causes relevant to the Diaspora.

The first of JWOF’s project will be their participation in the national ‘Take Your Child to Work Day’ on Thursday, April 25th – where the founding members will host a high school student in a work day to expose the next generation to successful immigrant women in all spheres of leadership and professional positions.

JWOF will also focus on its members by providing opportunities for networking with similar women’s groups and presenting varied programs focusing on issues such as financial/retirement security, health and wellness, family enrichment, political empowerment and equally important bonding and sisterhood.

JWOF founding group includes a board of six directors, headed by Dahlia Walker-Huntington and a fraternity of notable community women with the Honorary Chair as the Consul General of Jamaica to the Southern United States, currently, Honorable Sandra Grant Griffiths.

Attendees to the upcoming Launch/Luncheon will also benefit from a selection of vendors showcasing items for women.
