FT. LAUDERDALE – Jamaican national, Michael Everett was recently appointed Chairman of the Diversity Advisory Council of the Broward County Board of Commissioners in Florida.
Everett had been serving as a member of the Council since year 2000.
The objective of the 18-man body is to identify and focus attention on the needs and issues of the widely diverse communities of Broward County, which reflect various religious, ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The information is disseminated to the Broward County Commission for necessary action.
The Council also works with the local police, identifying ethnic needs and concerns.
Everett is the only Jamaican to ever serve on the Council formerly the Multi Ethnic Advisory Board, since its inception 1990.
He brings a wealth of experience in community development having worked in the media, theatre, and in the education field in Jamaica.
A graduate of Excelsior High School and Jamaica School of Drama, Everett migrated to the United States of America in 1980, first settling in New York before relocating to Florida. He developed a career in banking and public service working in state, county and municipal offices.
A former consultant and mediator, Everett feels that his vast knowledge and expertise will help him to create opportunities for community development as he seeks to continue empowering residents and sensitise them to the resources available through their municipalities and city commissions, and relevant foreign missions.Jamaica’s Consul General, Sandra Grant Griffiths, congratulated Everett on his appointment indicating that his wealth of experience could augur well for the task ahead.
South Florida, she said, represents a widely diverse background of ethnicity, culture and religion, “and it is important that we understand, respect and celebrate the value of our contribution towards community development across the Diaspora.”
