Jamaica National hosts reception to secure plans for Jamaican Olympians in London

KINGSTON, Jamaica – On Tuesday, January 25 Jamaica National hosted a small delegation from the West Midlands Police Authority which visited Jamaica from January 20-25, to meet with the Jamaica Olympic Committee and the Ministry of National Security regarding plans for the residency of the Jamaican Olympic Team in Birmingham.

Their aim was to develop links with local authorities to prepare for the influx of Jamaicans expected the London 2012 Olympics.

The team said they found the trip informative and valuable.

The Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association (JAAA) has already signed a contract with the Birmingham City Council for the team to be located at the University of Birmingham. As well, preparations are being made to use the Olympics as a vehicle to promote Jamaica and its products and services.

Planned activities include a Jamaica Theme Park in Birmingham, participation in local and international athletic events such as the IAAF World Athletics Championship in Daegu, South Korea in 2011, and forging closer relationships between institutions such as the University of Birmingham and universities in Jamaica.
