FT. LAUDERDALE – Debra Ehrhardt’s critically acclaimed one woman show entitled Jamaica, Farewell, returns to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts, Amaturo Theater on Sunday, January 20 for two performances, 3:00 pm and 7:30 pm.
The play was previously staged over the Thanksgiving weekend at the Broward Center where Ehahardt’s captivating performance impressed a very appreciative audience who gave a standing ovation at the end of the show.
Many in the audience could relate with the various characters portrayed by a very convincing Ehrhardt, a captivating story-teller whose performance convinces the audience they are deeing a play with a full cast! Ehrhardt tells her story with wit and panache, in a deliciously funny way.
Jamaica, Farewell is set against the political upheaval in Jamaica in the seventies and is based on Ehrhardt’s true life story. Jamaica, Farewell will take you on an unforgettable journey escaping poverty, revolution, prison time, rape and death in an island paradise brought to the brink of ruin by political turmoil.
With the odds stacked against her, she pulls off a daring dangerous caper with the unwitting help of an American CIA agent in order to fulfill her lifelong dream- starting over in America.
Jamaica, Farewell has played in Los Angeles, New York and Atlanta to rave reviews from critics and a predominantly American audience. “Performing before a mostly Jamaican audience [in Florida] was such a pleasure for me” stated Ehrhardt who addressed a very enthusiastic crowd at a post-show reception on opening night. “I am really impressed by the turnout and how the show was well supported in the Jamaican community.”
Ehrhardt was so moved by the many requests to perform locally that she quickly committed to
return to the Broward Center in January, prior to a six week run in New York and a tour of major U.S. cities and Europe.
Finlay’s Ship to the Caribbean, one of the most recognizable shipping companies in the Caribbean community as well as Jamaica National Money Transfer, a leading Jamaican remittance agency, immediately signed on as sponsors for the return performances, as they were impressed with the
quality and high standard of Jamaica, Farewell.
