Jamaica-Born Professor Joins FIU College of Medicine
CORAL GABLES – The Herbert Wertheim College of Medicine recently created the position of Assistant Dean for Diversity and is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. J. Scott Hamilton to this position. Dr. Hamilton is currently the Associate Director of the Ronald E. McNair Post-baccalaureate Achievement Program at Florida International University.
Dr. Hamilton was born and raised in Kingston, Jamaica, West Indies. Dr. Hamilton received a Bachelor of Science in Psychology from Florida International University in 1989 and later a Master of Science in Guidance Counseling from FIU in 1994. He then received a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the Miami Institute of Psychology/Carlos Albizu University in 2003.

Dr. Hamilton has received a number of awards including the FIU Faculty Advisor of the Year Award and the FIU Torch Award for Service to the FIU Community in 2006 and in 2007. Dr. Hamilton additionally was honored by the American Psychological Association in 2008 receiving an Outstanding Faculty Award for his work as a faculty advisor for Psi Chi, the International Honor Society of Psychology.
In this new position Dr. Hamilton will be working directly with Dean John Rock and Executive Associate Dean for Student Affairs Sanford Markham in achieving the mission goal of training physicians to serve South Florida’s diverse population through patient-centered curriculum instilling cultural competence. Dr. Hamilton’s work will involve faculty, staff and medical students where he will help shape policy to meet this training mission as well as the mission of providing Florida students greater access to medical education and the mission of fostering research to discover and advance medically relevant knowledge.
Dr. Hamilton will begin his new position on July 1, 2010.
