Humanitarian award presented to Food For The Poor

COCONUT CREEK – The distinguished Martin Luther King Jr. Humanitarian Award of the Jamaica America Friendship Association (JAFA) has been awarded to Food For The Poor.

The award ceremony and banquet will be held at the Pegasus Hotel in Jamaica on April 28.

Last year honorees included; Senator Douglas Orane, Chief Executive Officer of Grace Kennedy & Company Limited, and Sir William Morris, then Chancellor, University of Technology.

Food For The Poor’s Executive Director, Angel Aloma has always believed, “We are not in the business of giving people just the things they physically need: food, shelter, clean water. We are in the business of giving people back the ability to dream and become self-sufficient.”

“Feeding the hungry is only the beginning,” said Robin Mahfood, President/CEO of Food For The Poor. “By providing homes, water wells, medical care, skills training, and education, we provide all members of the community, young and old, with hope, dignity and pride. It does not take long for success to follow.”

Micro-enterprise opportunities offered by Food For The Poor include fishing villages, tilapia farms, fruit tree nurseries and handcrafted banana bark cards. Self-sufficiency offered by the micro-enterprise opportunities is critical to successfully sustain communities.

JAFA is really a unique partnership, formed by merging two important organizations, the Jamaican American Society and American Studies Association of Jamaica. JAFA is a nonpolitical association that works with the United States Embassy office of Public Affairs to increase understanding and cooperation between the people of the two countries.

Food For The Poor, the third largest international relief and development organization in the nation and the #1 charity in Florida, does much more than simply feed the millions of hungry poor in 16 countries of the Caribbean and Latin America. Since 1982, we have provided clean water, medicines, educational materials, homes, support for orphans and the aged, skills training and emergency relief, with more than 96% of all donations going directly to programs that help the poor.
